Portrait Story: Zero, the Dog Who Won Hearts — and a Beer Can
Meet Zero — the senior dog who won a photo contest at von Trapp Brewing, appeared on a beer can, raised over $8,500 for charity, and inspired a portrait that became a source of healing for his family.
Some portraits come to me in the usual way: a client reaches out, we talk about their pet, I begin. And then there are stories like Zero's — the ones that find their way to you through an unexpected chain of people and moments, and that stay with you long after the painting is done.
How I Met Zero
Zero was introduced to me through my daughter, Emily, who works as marketing manager at von Trapp Brewing. He had won the Animals and Ales Pet Photo Contest — raising $8,520 for Veterinarians Without Borders. As part of his prize, Zero appeared on a limited-release beer can label, and his family was invited to lunch with the von Trapp family.
Moved by their story, I offered to paint Zero, a beloved senior dog.
The Portrait
Sadly, Zero passed away on the Halloween after the contest, making the portrait especially meaningful for his family.
I painted Zero's wide smile surrounded by bright, cheerful flowers, creating a sunny, heartwarming scene for his family.
